Combs and dematting tools should be part of every groomer's arsenal. Whether you are a professional groomer or a pet owner who'd like to try your hand at long hair care, these tools are great for tackling tangles and ugly mats in a pet's fur. Combs may be used to remove loose hair, dirt and fleas from your pet's coat, and can help distribute natural oils in the coat to help keep it shiny. Dematting tools are specifically designed to help you get these hardened snarls of hair out of your pet's coat, and usually incorporate a cutting implement to assist in this task. Grooming tip: offer tasty treats during and after grooming so that your pet enjoys the process and looks forward to the next session!
Combs for Pets
You'll want to choose a comb for your pet based on their size and their hair coat length and texture. Most pet combs are designed to remove loose hair from your pet (before it ends up on your couch or coughed up in a hairball). Flea combs are a special type of very fine toothed comb designed to remove fleas and flea dirt from your pet's coat. These combs are an excellent alternative to using harsh flea-killing chemicals on very young or sick animals. Look for comfort grips or ergonomic handles on your comb to make grooming comfortable for you too.
Dematting Tools
Fur mats are not only unsightly, but they can cause pain and lead to skin infections in your pet if that are not removed. Mats tend to occur on the back (especially in obese cats), behind the ears, on your pet's underside, and sometimes underneath the collar. Dematting tools (also known as dematting rakes) slice through the mat, so you preserve more of your pet's hair than if you cut out the mat in a big chunk. There are tools designed for both left and right handed use, as well as other ergonomic features.
