One of the best parts of owning a pet is taking it out for a walkor one of the most annoying, it really depends on your location and your temperament. It's not all bright spring days and waving to the neighbors, after all. Harnesses and leashes can take some of the irritation out of this task, for you and for your pet.
Harnesses
Harnesses are a bit more comfortable than collars, especially for pets who are just getting used to being walked. A cat or ferret won't consent to a leash if they already aren't used to a collar, and like larger dogs, they have no problem pulling on the lead to get away, even if it means hurting themselves. Younger, more excitable dogs also have this problem. A harness can help reign in these behaviors, while keeping your pet from choking. By putting the restraints around the animal's upper body, a harness keeps the stress off your pet's neck and shoulders.
Some harnesses can also work in your car to secure your pet while keeping him or her out of a dreaded crate or carrier, though you should have a good understanding of your pet's comfort level in a car before trying one. To properly size a harness for your pet, measure the area behind the front legs and add two inches; this will give you a good fit with some wiggle room.
Leashes
Of course, with out the leash, your pet's harness is just a fun little vest. The most common kinds of leashes are either nylon or retractable. Both allow for flexible control range leashes. These are also special show leashes that look nice and are easy to remove, provided your pet is feeling cooperative.
