Penn State Nittany Lions

Legend has it, Penn State  did not have a school mascot until 1907.  The head director of the school had been invited to Princeton University and was embarrassed by his peers when he admitted Penn State did not have a symbol.  So he came up with one on the spot, in direct opposition to the Princeton Tiger, he coined the Nittany Lion,  in reference to the mountain lions that roamed Pennsylvania's Mount Nittany.  He proclaimed a lion could use its superior strength to beat a tiger.  And in recent football history, the Nittany Lions would crush Princeton any day.

Penn State is one of the most tradition-rich football  programs out there.  Heck, their coach, Joe Paterno,  is a living relic.  Having coached the Nittany Lions since 1966, he is unbelievably closing in on 400 wins with the team, which is almost half of Penn State football's total wins ever.
