Panasonic Lumix Line

Panasonic is not exactly well known as a camera manufacturer, however, they are in the market trying to compete with the rest of the big boys. They have one major advantage, and that is cost. They have good prices for what they offer. Their cameras are made with plastic bodies (except for the DMC- LC1 ) so that they are lightweight.  They also have long zooms, and their entire selection also features optical image stabilization technology so that you never have to worry about blurry photos. Another great thing about Panasonic cameras are their easy to read menus. For advice on buying a digital camera read the buying guide. Note that the prices listed are estimates and are not always the lowest street price available

Low-Range Consumer Cameras

Panasonic DMC- LZ1
  • $200+
  • 4 and 5MP respectively on these two snapshot cameras.
  • They both have an impressive 6x optical stabilized zoom, which is double that of other competitors. This means extra sharp pictures no matter what range you shoot from.
  • No optical view finder but a big 2" LCD monitor.
  • Recording capabilities are very basic. Not recommended if you want to get video and sound as well as still images.

Panasonic DMC- FX9
  • $350+
  • 6 and 5MP resolution respectively.
  • The two models come in either black or silver.
  • Their zoom is not as impressive as that of the LZ models. Only 3x optical zoom.
  • Better lenses with more range, from telephoto to macro levels.
  • The FX9 has one benefit over the FX8, which is its faster shutter speed.
  • More options for setting white balance, scene setting modes, continuous shooting, and a big 2.5" LCD monitor.
  • In other words, no viewfinder on either.
