New York Rangers Merchandise
True Blue
The Rangers got their name because of Madison Square Garden President, "Tex" Rickard, who decided that New York was ready for a second team; he recruited
Conn Smythe to pick out a roster of talented players for the new team. News writers starting referring to the unnamed team as "Tex's Rangers," and the name stuck to this very day. The Rangers logo is actually the team name written in a diagonal across their jerseys, and they do not have an alternate jersey. Check out some of your options for fan wear.
The Curse of 1940
Up there with some of the famous sports curses, the curse of 1940 is well known by Rangers fans, and was used to explain why the Rangers did not win a Stanley cup in the years spanning 1940-1994. Fans have contributed many theories and lots of conjecture as to how the curse originated.
The first possible cause occurred when the new
Madison Square Garden was built and the Garden Corporation, elated at having paid off the mortgage for the arena, burned it in the bowl of the Stanley Cup. Some fans believe that the sacred cup was not to be messed with, which led many to believe that this was the origination of the curse. Another theory comes from words spoken by Red Dutton, coach and manager of the New York Americans. After four years of suspending operations with the Americans for World War II, Dutton looked to revive his team at the end of the war. Upon finding that he was not granted permission to revive his old team, Dutton said that the Rangers would never win another cup as long as he lived. Dutton passed on in 1987 and the Rangers won the cup seven years later. Whatever the origination of the curse, it was finally broken in 1994!
