Motorcycle and ATV Gauges
So you've noticed that there are some issues with your vehicle's gauges. That's a bummer. You want to take your
bike or
Sport ATV out for a wild ride but I guess all that sloshing mud and rough, bumpy terrain really took a toll on the way the gauges are functioning.
Types of Gauges
The gauges are fairly self-explanatory but we'll go over them briefly to recap.
!
*
Oil Pressure: This will measure whether or not the vehicle's brakes and other essential parts are being properly oiled to work.
*
oil temperature so you know if it's overheating.
*
Tachometer: The tachometer measures the RPM of the vehicle's engine.
*
Speedometer: Displays the vehicle's current speed.
*
coolant and how well it's working.
*
Tire pressure: These are external gauges used to measure whether or not your tires are sufficiently filled or overfilled with air.
There are usually two types of gauges:
battery.
Look at the Features
* You'll want a gauge that matches your vehicle (ATV or motorcycle) in style and material. If you own a bike with
chrome everywhere then you're not going to want a mismatched metal gauge. Aesthetically it's displeasing.
* Do you ride your vehicle at night? You'll want a
backlit gauge so you can check even when there is little external light.
* If you use an ATV professionally for work you can't take a day off just because it's raining or there's some serious moisture in the air. You might want to invest in a
waterproof gauge.
Troubleshooting and Installation
* Before you go buy all new stuff take a second to inspect your vehicle. If the gauge is giving you weird readings it could be a sign that something else is wrong.
* If you notice the oil gauges are funky you should check the gauge's connection to the
leak detection and repair kits.
* If it's an electric gauge check the battery and
electrical system.
* Make sure you buy
wires to connect your gauge if it's not sold with them.
* Motorcycle gauges normally rest on the
ties to keep the wires safe.
* ATV gauges sit in the vehicle's
dashboard much like those in cars and other automobiles.
* You want to make sure the gauges are responsive when you start the vehicle. If they work you should take the vehicle for a test drive to make sure the gauges work under different conditions and speeds.
