Motorcycle and ATV Exhaust Systems
The purpose of the exhaust system is to carry gases away from the
combustion engine in a vehicle. The exhaust system not only affects the vehicle's riding performance but it can affect the environment in terms of emissions and noise pollution. Since manufacturing regulations change over time, it is essential that you keep on top of the developments because your bike may need to be updated. On the plus side your bike gets an overhaul with nice new shiny parts!
Parts
*
Cylinder head: This piece rests on top of the cylinders and transfers the gases from the intake manifold to the exhaust manifold.
*
Exhaust manifold: The exhaust manifold takes the gas and excess chemical from the combustion process and sends it through the exhaust pipe.
*
Exhaust pipe: The gases travel out the exhaust pipe.
*
Catalytic converter: This makes sure that the emissions from your vehicle are not killing the environment or releasing poisonous toxins into breathing air. Without one there are some serious bad news bears headed your way.
*
Muffler: Reduces the noise pollution caused by the engine combustion process. Some motorists prefer to use a muffler that does not reduce the noise too much to warn other motorists on the road that they are there.
*
Turbocharger: Using a turbine engine propelled by the exhaust gas, the turbocharger increases air density for the engine. They were popular in Kawasakis during the 1980s. Companies do not really manufacture supercharged motorcycles anymore.
Accessories and Upgrading
If for whatever reason you think your exhaust system is failing, inefficient or lackluster you can upgrade it with accessories.
* There are upgrade kits and pieces you can purchase for different parts of the exhaust. A good choice is a
cylinder head upgrade kit just to make sure all the combustion gases are being moved through the system properly.
* You can buy
baffles to reduce the sound in the exhaust pipe. These work sort of similar to mufflers.
* There are different types of mufflers. These include the
cherry bomb also known as a glass pack muffler, which only absorbs to reduce sound.
* On dirt bikes and offExhaust'>high end exhaust pipe.
* If you don't want to go through the trouble of finding the separate pieces and putting them together you can buy a complete exhaust system as a pack and often specifically designed for your
Caliber make full systems.
* The exhaust can get pretty hot. Nobody likes to get burned so it's smart to install a
heat shield if your exhaust pipes are within reach of your legs.
* As with anything else, you're going to need a auto shop style
tool kit.
* If you like hearing the roar of your vehicle try adding a
tail pipe. It normally increases the volume of that sound.
