Motorcycle and ATV Drive Train Shifters
This is part of the
differentials. The drive train is the part that makes your vehicle actually move by getting the wheels and gears turning. The drive train shifter is responsible for moving the gears so that the vehicle is moving properly for the road and weather.
How the Different Types Work
There are three basic kinds of shifters for motorcycles. They may be slightly different in size and shape based on manufacturer.
suicide shifters because they required the motorist to remove their hand from the handlebars to change gears.
Drum shifters:
* This is a shifter requires a
ratchet pawl to turn. If you're using a shift pawl and you press on the lever, the pawl will move the drum in the same ratio. If you pull up on the lever, it will reverse the drum movement also to the same ratio. A ratchet pawl simply has two ratchets. One will turn while the other locks, thus moving the drum in either direction. The moving drum grabs and guides the forks that move the gears into place. There is often a piece that will lock the drum in place so as not to lose the gear like a drum stopper.
Ball lock shifters:
* This shifter has multiple gears, a
axle. The hollow shaft is crafted with four holes each containing a steel ball. The gears on the shaft each have four grooves to correspond. When the metal rod is moved inside the hollow shaft it locks a steel ball into one of the corresponding gear grooves. When another gear is selected it will release the ball and push out another one into a different gear.
Shift quadrants and cam plates:
* This shifter uses a
shift quadrant to move the forks and gears. The grooves are either in the cam plate or the shift quadrant. When either is moved, the grooves push the forks into the gears to make them shift.
Shifting Gears on Motorcycles and ATVs
* The parts of a motorcycle that you actually need to move to shift gears are the
clutch and lever. To shift gears on a motorcycle you move the lever with your left foot. For first gear you push down all the way. The lever will return to its original place. For each gear upward you pull up on the lever after each return. For neutral you have to ease on the clutch and pull up on the lever.
* In fourLever'>ATV clutch once for first gear. You can shift through the gears by pulling up on the shifter, releasing the clutch and moving the throttle a little bit.
