Polar fleece was originally created in 1979 by Malden Mills, which is now widely known as Polartec LLC. The scientist who invented polar fleece, Aaron Feuerstein wanted everybody to benefit from his invention. It was for this reason that he intentionally did not patent
fabric that warms people across the world.

Polar Fleece
Polar fleece is a term often used to describe a specific type of
strong fabric meant to emulate and in some ways even to surpass wool. Fleece has many of wools greatest qualities like its high insulation properties and possibly more importantly its high water resistance. Polar fleece does however have quite a few important qualities that make polar fleece completely surpass wool as a fabric. For one it is much more water resistant than wool, polar fleece is a hydrophobic fabric which means that as a fabric polar fleece will literally repel water. This hydrophobic fabric holds less than 1% of its own weight in water. Unlike wool even when polar fleece is wet it will retain many of its insulating properties. Fleece is also a very light, soft and
easy to wash fabric. Wool on the other hand is fairly heavy, becomes scratchy if you do not wash it right, and is fairly difficult to wash.
Fleece is used in
wool products are generally viewed as inferior to their fleece counterparts.
Fleece is often worn by people who consider themselves vegans and even people who consider themselves eco-warriors. Fleece is a great vegan alternative to wool since it in no way shape or form uses any animal parts, whereas wool is taken from an animal and is therefore not a vegan product. Fleece has also been highly praised as a green or eco friendly fabric since it can be made partially from recycled plastic bottles. In a lot of ways fleece is the fabric of the future since it can be a recycled product helping dispose of all the plastic bottles that otherwise clutter up dumping grounds. Fleece is a very light, soft and easy to wash fabric.
Polar Fleece Drawbacks
One of the biggest drawback of polar fleece is that if it is not treated properly specifically to make it
flame retardant, than it is extremely flammable. Considering that it is made out of a petroleum product this makes a certain amount of since.
Wool on the other hand is extremely fire resistant, especially for a
textile. Fortunately it has become common practice for manufacturers to treat their polar fleece to ensure that it is flame retardant.
Another major drawback of polar fleece is that it is made primarily from petroleum derivatives. Now this is an extremely positive thing when the manufacturers of polar fleece used
clothing from.
