Bicycle clothing may not be the most fashion-forward ensembles and they certainly won't increase your skill level, however, they will make sure you're as comfortable as possible when you race down that mountain side. Serious cyclists will need to get used to wearing some tight fitting outfits, but it's a good thing you're already in shape from all that biking!
Jerseys, Shorts, and Jackets
Casual bikers or men who enjoy BMXing can take a sigh of relief to know it's okay if they wear looser fitting shirts and shorts. You're not looking for speed so you don't need all the features of cycling apparel. However, for those who enjoy more than the occasional bike ride, you will want clothes that reduce drag. Lycra spandex and other form-fitting materials will help wick away moisture and keep you cool. When choosing shirts and jerseys, here are some features to consider:
* A neck zipper to help you cool off.
* A stand up collar when you need to keep warm.
* Pockets for carrying any items.
* Sleeves that allow you to move.
Men have the choice of wearing normal cycling shorts or bib shorts. The advantage of bib shorts is that they have no waistband which can restrict breathing. Either way, these should also be made out of spandex. Padding is essential for men to prevent chaffing, just remember you don't need to wear underwear with these shorts. When you read about panels, this refers to the comfort and flexibility of the shorts. The more panels, the better the quality. Cycling jackets differ from normal jackets in that the arms and back are longer so your back isn't exposed when leaning forward. Pick jackets that are both water and windproof. The jacket should be lightweight but still able to keep you warm.
Accessories
Once you're suited up you'll need a few more pieces to complete your outfit. A helmet is absolutely necessary to prevent any injuries. Check out our Helmets guide to learn how to find the perfect one. Consider wearing a hat under the helmet to wick away all that sweaty moisture. These hats are specially designed to keep your head warm and fit comfortably under your helmet. You can find gloves for both the winter and the summer. Winter gloves will protect your hands from the wind, while summer gloves will have short fingers to keep you cool. '''Never''' wear normal cotton socks. Polyester socks will keep feet dry.
