Men's Spring Style Guide

Men's fashions are considered more basic than women's since they are less prone to changing from one spring to the next. That's not entirely inaccurate; a man's wardrobe is mostly composed of staple items that don't change very much over the years: you buy a new jacket  because you need a new jacket, not because camel  is in. But that doesn't mean you're entirely off the hook, style-wise. Even men are subject to the whims of fashion, which, considering how good this season's trends will look on you, is a very good thing.

Style Rules

One of the best overall guidelines to follow when trying to dress fashionablly is to incorporate new colors with old school fashions. You can come up with your own definitive style by combining time-tested styles, like cashmere and pinstripes or leather and Levi's, with the most up-to-date colors, fabrics, and cut. Wear something unique at least once a week, so you're known as the guy with the impressive cuff link collection, not the creepy guy that stares at the interns.

How to Look Great
  • If you're truly afraid of color, stick to the basics: white, tan, and blue. You can work on adding reds, oranges, or loud patterns in small doses, like on socks and ties.
  • Whatever you decide to wear, be confident and have fun with your clothes!

  • You can always get use out of these spring items:

Casual Wear

This season, men's fashions can be boiled down into three basic looks: biker, nautical, and weathered.

Biker

Motorcycle chic is in this spring, and and that means leather. To avoid looking like you're wearing a costume, look for variations on the theme; zipper legged jeans ,motorcycle boots , or quilted leather jackets . Mix and match these items with traditional spring fare or other new trends.

Nautical

Nautical-inspired fashions are big this year, in a very versatile way. You have a lot to choose from; the simple yet classic Breton stripe shirt, a more beach-wear friendly scuba top , some slim fit chinos  in bright colors, and lots of linen . Add some straight  or wide leg jeans to approximate bell bottoms, and you have an easy, casual look.

Weathered

A rugged variation on the nautical look, in some respects. Faded clothes in sturdy fabrics, like worn-in jeans  and khakis ,weathered shirts ,traditional leather bags , and soft suede jackets . This is closer to an all-over look than the others, but do avoid looking like you overdosed at the thrift shop. Look for a svelte silhouette, perhaps with slim fit jeans .

Suits

Classic Cut

It seems like every turn of the season brings a different suit trend, a new cut or color that will revolutionize your wardrobe. This season don't worry about that so much. A classic masculine suit with broad shoulders  and a slimming fit  is what's current, and when classic is current, that means a lot of bang for your buck. You can wear this for business and still look rakish at your cousin's May wedding.

After securing a well -itted suit, it's time to get down to details:

  • Brightly colored socks  are playful and draw attention to those expensive wing tips .
  • Loud ties  are a fun way to remind the office that it's spring!
  • Subtle patterns, like checks  on a dress shirt, add an almost subliminal sense of texture to a suit.

Trendy Suits

According to GQ.com's Spring Style Preview, brown and blue are a must for suits this season. A lighter brown suit  paired with a pale blue shirt  has a lot of warmth to it, but a blue suit  with a brown belt  and brown shoes  has the oposite effect--it draws the eye in with popping colors. You can also pair that blue suit with this season's hot dress shirt color, khaki .

Must Haves

Polos

Polos  and rugby shirts  are a popular, preppy style to rock every spring. This season, vintage or faded polos are your best bet.

Braided Belts

Braided belts  add that finishing touch to your casual attire. Yes, you need more than one belt.

Double-Breasted Jackets

Look like a man in charge with a double-breasted jacket ; you can wear it as part of a suit, of course, or pair it with a T-shirt and jeans.

Fisherman Sweaters

Fisherman sweaters  are a warm yet totally masculine part of the nautical trend. Look like a salty sea dog, even if you're more into fishing for compliments than grouper.

Suede Bucks

Casual yet rugged, more sophisticated than a sneaker but still okay to wear with denim and chinos, 'tis the season for suede bucks .
