Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

On January 19, 2009, we celebrate the 23rd anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This federal holiday serves as a time to commemorate the life of Dr. King and all of the advancements he made for African American rights. At age 35, he was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. True to form, he donated his monetary prize of $54,123 to further the civil rights movement. Designated as a national day of volunteer service in 1994, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, also known as the King Day of Service, is meant to break down barriers by joining people together through volunteer work.
