That short, pudgy adorable little plumber we all love is the most popular video game character with an image that is recognizable world wide. From his first appearance breaking barrels with mallets and going up against the evil Donkey Kong to his latest trek among the stars and planets, Mario games have enraptured gamers across the globe. But let's not forget Mario's equally awesome though sometimes underrated little brother Luigi, who had his own hand in stomping goombas and collecting coins.
The Mario Brothers franchise has spawned dozens of games, from the platforming style it was birthed from to kart racing, tennis matches, and party games. There has also been cartoons, plush dolls, clothing, even piñatas with the face of the plumber on it. Mario is Nintendo's biggest franchise, and being the lovable protagonist that he is, it's no wonder why.
The Main Mario Platformers
There have been a LOT of Mario platforming games that follow the basic storyline. Here are some highlights to check out:
*
Super Mario Bros: This is the game that everyone knows and loves from their Nintendo days that introduced Bowser, (then known as King Koopa), Peach, (known as Princess Toadstool), and all the classic enemies.
*
Super Mario Bros 3: Often credited for improving and really changing the platforming genre, Super Mario Bros 3 had a top down map, awesome new items and introduced the Koopa Kids.
*
Super Mario 64: This was one of the first 3D platform games with rich environments and a dynamic, movable camera.
*
Paper Mario: Paper Mario took the idea of Mario and turned it on it's head. Part platformer, part RPG, this fun design of a flat, paper world was a great addition to the franchise.
*
Super Mario Galaxy: Super Mario Galaxy was the Wii release that brought Mario up and out into the stars and space.
Mario's An Athelete Pro Too!
Mario and his friends have spawned a whole slew of games outside of the typical platformer: sports and racing.
*
Mario Kart: The Mario Kart franchise started on the Super Nintendo and since has expanded to be one of the best racing games of all time.
*
Mario Tennis: Mario Tennis was one of the first true sport games that involved the plumber and his friends playing a super powered version of the game.
