Nothing ruins a camping trip more than not being able to get warm. The right down vests can provide a lot of warmth and flexibility so you can be active and go camping in colder climates. Outdoor clothing has a lot of excellent, helpful features these days that aim to make you and your kids as comfortable as possible while out in the elements.
Hiking Tips
* People make the common mistake of removing their layers while hiking because they've worked up a sweat, but once you've stopped moving and you're covered in sweat, there's no easier way to catch a chill then to let the wind and cold chill that sweat. Do your best to approximate how many layers you'll need as you hike and aim not to remove them, or if you do, put them back on once you've stopped hiking.
* Look for coats that unzip in areas for ventilation if you'll be doing serious hiking
* When hiking with kids bring snacks for short breaks along the way and remember they won't keep as well with your longer legs!
* Always keep a trail map with you of the area your hiking in, just in case you get on the wrong trail, just by accident
* Don't let your kids hike away from the trail, it's harder than they'd imagine to get back!
