Promise rings date back to Biblical times, where instead of engagements, there were betrothals. In the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe, rings were exchanged to symbolize everlasting friendship or love. They were called "scribbling rings" because they were commonly set with uncut diamonds or crystals and then used to "scribble" romantic vows into another's window pane with the exposed edges.
Engagement rings took their place around the 18th or 19th century. The term "promise ring" was coined sometime in the 1990's, and was initially intended to be a promise of someday becoming engaged.
