Independent Films Buying Guide, Stores, and Prices

Independent Films

Search:Independent films, also known as "indie films", are usually limited-distribution, low-budget films that have a distinct style and level of creativity, and which are made by independent production companies. Today, the industry has gained popularity and become an arena in which all filmmakers, stars, and even lesser-knowns can create films with their own personal styles and storylines.

The Buzz

Let's face it, we are talking about the films that most of us miss until award season rolls around--and it shouldn't be that way! Sometimes, some of the best performance are overlooked because they were overtaken at the box offices by a Marvel Comics superhero. Check out the independent films before the actors and actresses, directors, writers, and producers hit the red carpet. For this guide, we're going to stick with the independent films that actually use actors, and steer clear of independent film documentaries, which is a whole different ballgame! Keeping track of everything happening on the indie film circuit is difficult for anyone, even those who are in it!

Festivals

US

Festivals are where some of the most creative and successful film makers first have a chance to unveil their work to the world. In the US, you have a ton of festivals to choose from, some of which you are probably relatively close to. Check out these big state-wide festivals so you can plan to make it to the next one.

  • Sundance  (Utah)
  • Tribeca (New York)
  • SXSW - South By Southwest Film Conference and Festival (Texas)
  • Denver International Film Festival (Colorado)
  • Telluride Film Festival (Colorado)
  • Austin Film Festival (Texas)

International

Luckily, film festivals also give you the chance to explore some interesting releases from other countries. Foreign films which are screened are usually pretty good because they have to meet certain standards by the people who run each festival.

  • Venice Film Festival (oldest in the world!)
  • The Cannes Film Festival
  • Denver International Film Festival
  • Berlin International Film Festival
  • The New York Film Festival
  • The Toronto International Film Festival

Go-To Film Makers

Some names in the industry are more recognizable than others. We all want to see great performances when we go to the movies, but a good film begins with the writer's story and the director's vision. Here are some of the writers and directors whose names are regulars on the indie movie scene.

Recent Favorites

Tons of indie films made every year, so where to begin? Here are the highlights from the last two years or so.

2010/2011

127 Hours

Only director Danny Boyle  can keep us interested in a film where we basically follow only one character in one location for 90 minutes. It may help that that one character is James Franco .

The Kids Are All Right

This is one of the favorites from indie movie festivals of 2010. And with a cast like Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo , and Mia Wasikowska, why wouldn't it be?

A Prophet

Okay, this is a foreign film from France, but it is totally worth mentioning since it was all over the indie news circuit in 2009 (released in the US in February 2010) with rave reviews.

Mother and Child

Annette Bening  stars in this American drama of a mother haunted by her decision to give up her daughter. It's another ensemble cast starring Samuel L. Jackson ,Naomi Watts , Kerry Washington, and Jimmy Smits.

I Am Love

Tilda Swinton  stars in this Italian film and gives what is said to be one of her best performances. She plays a rich man's Russian wife caught in the middle of a love story/drama of changing family fortunes in Milan.

2009

Get Low

My own personal philosophy: if Bill Murray  is in it, then I go see it. This mystery/folk tale is about a man in rural Tennessee who stirs things up in his town after demanding his own funeral while he's still alive.

Crazy Heart

It was every award show's favorite film! Jeff Bridges just cannot seem to do wrong: in this film, based on the 1987 novel by Thomas Cobb , he plays a country music musician.

A Serious Man

Brothers Joel and Ethan Coen created a world of dark comedy around a professor whose life begins to fall apart both professionally and personally.

A Single Man

Everyone wanted to check out the directorial debut from clothing designer Tom Ford in 2009 with his film, A Single Man. Also starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Julianna Moore.

The Last Station

Based on the Jay Parini's biography of Leo Tolstoy , this story follows the life of the Russian author as he deals with his celebrity, family, and success. it was unanimously agreed that Helen Mirren  stole the show with her performance.
