How to Teach a Child to Read

By User:AllieCashel @timeAndDate(1281639712) I think it's safe to assume that you don't remember learning how to read, I certainly don't. I can't even imagine what it was like to not know how to do it. Sometimes I try to imagine what letters looked like or what I thought of newspapers or booksdid I know what they even were? Every time I attempt to bring myself back to that state of illiteracy though, I fail. I think this is probably because learning how to read and write is a such major step in individual development. It opens up a world of communication and information that only years or months before seemed to be nothing but gibberish. So, from what I can imagine, the processes of taking that massive developmental and communicative step is no easy task. When my youngest brother was learning to read, I watched in awe as he developed. In less than a year he went from ripping pages out of books to reading them aloud. If your children are ready to make that step, they need you help them do it.

When To Start

Where to Start

Sounding It Out

Simple Words and Repeated Phrases

When children understand the alphabet and have the ability to sound out simple words, they're ready to start reading on their own! To start them off, look for books with simple, three letter, consonantout words and many repeated phrases, which help to reinforce specific words and sound patterns in the minds of young readers.  Some great books to start with include...

Computer, TV and Other Electronic Options

If you want to take a little time off or just want some extra help, consider trying some of the new electronic learning tools. Hooked on Phonics and LeapFrog are now making DVDs, computer games, and automated reading tools to help teach important reading skills. While many people swear by these electronic programs, others claim that they are too distracting, so you'll have to determine what is best for your young reader. There's no harm in trying, and these can potentially be great tools to get unenthusiastic kids more involved.
