First booming in popularity during the
model trains has risen again in the past few years. From collecting the rarest of cars to creating a mini replica of a railroad station, model train collecting can be a way to show off your creativity and engage in a really fun hobby.
Where to Start
Research
Before you get started on your model train collection, do some research.
What Are You Collecting?
They next step is to determine the type of trains you would like to collect. This can potentially be an expensive hobby, especially if you tend toward rare and older collectibles. You can, however, find
trains less than $100 to start your collection.
You can focus your collection on specific variables or you can buy a variety of model trains.
Local hobby shops are a good place to start buying model trains, but you can also try eBay.com, GeorgesTrains.com and other online retailers, which will have a wide array of options. You can also branch out and visit train
trade shows, expos, and conventions.
Layout and Space
If you plan on setting up a railway for your model train collection, you'll need to make sure you have the space for it. Most people begin on a 4x8 piece of plywood, oneinch thick piece of foam. The best place for a permanent layout is on a large table, preferably specifically built. Placing it on the floor can be risky as someone can accidentally step on it, they are awkward to get to, and you have to break it up to clean the floor.
Before you start buying and building, draw the track layout on a piece of paper. This will help you make sure you know where the tracks will go and where you will place other features, like buildings and landscapes. Therefore, you will buy only what you need. Once you're set on your layout, draw it out on your foundation and then begin building your railroad.
