How to Build a Bookcase

Types of Bookcases

You can construct any sort of bookcase you like, but your design will ultimately depend on the space you have to work with. For safety's sake, pick up a tool box; they can be used for building your new bookcase, or and for getting a good handle on any other project you may work on in the future.

Wood Types

A few types of wood are commonly used for bookcases and household furniture pieces. * '''Mahogany''': This is a classic choice for most home furnishings and is one of the strongest types of wood around. This finely textured material works well with adhesives, such as glue, nails, and screws; and is easy to saw. * '''Maple''': Maple wood is quite durable and lasts a long time. While there are different types of maples (soft, red, curly, etc.), for a sturdy bookcase, you may want to go with hard maple. Also known as tiger maple, this will hold up against wear from the environment, and will look great when finished and stained. * '''Cherry''': Cherry wood does not shrink or warp, so if you live in a tough climate or have a roof with an occasional leak, your bookcase will hold up. * '''Oak''': Again, there are different varieties to choose from. You are generally choosing between American Oak, and (the more reliable) European Oak. This is a hard wood, so make sure your tools are at their sharpest since this lumber is known to wear down blades. * '''Plywood''': A strong type of plywood, like birch plywood, is great to paint on.
