How I Met Your Mother
Craig Thomas and Carter Bays were inspired to create
How I Met Your Mother when they thought, "let's write about our friends and the stupid stuff we did in New York." The plot and personalities are loosely based on the lives of the show's creators (who also reside in the Big Apple): Ted's character reflects Carter Bays, and Marshall and Lily are based loosely on Craig Thomas and his wife.

* Ted Mosby (
Josh Radnor) is the central character in the show. The lovable loser dreams to be a famous architect, but struggles to make it, and has his share of disappointments, including getting left at the alter, and losing his job, then getting offered a job by the man with whom his fiance ran away.
* Marshall Eriksen (
Columbia Law School grad, who went to school with the intent to devote his life to protecting the environment. Instead he accepts a job at a corporate law firm, protecting the interests of a theme park with several safety violations.
* Lily Aldrin (
Allyson Hannigan) is Marshall's wife and a kindergarten teacher who has dreams of becoming an artist.
* Barney Stinson (
Neil Patrick Harris) is an infamous womanizer trying to make up for lost time, as he remained a virgin until his fiance broke up with him in college.
* Robin (
Cobie Smulders) is Ted's romantic target in the early season's, but they decide to be'' just friends'', which causes plenty of comedic tension.
