Maple Trees
Crimson King Maples
** Perhaps the most common variety found in gardens across America, this tree is extremely weather hardy, grows very fast to a height of 50 feet or more, and provides dense shade when grown.
** A highly tolerant plant, Crimson Kings survive dry and wet conditions.
** Crimson Kings, like many maples, will prevent grass from growing in the region around its base.
*
Royal Red Maples
** A smaller version of the Crimson King.
*
Green Japanese Maples
** Green Japanese are somewhat vulnerable to adverse conditions; maintain a shady locale and well-drained, slightly acidic soil.
** May grow as high as 25 feet.
*
Norway Maples
** A stunning variety, leaves turn bright yellow in spring and fall.
** A very hardy variety, tolerant of soil, weather and sun conditions.
** Norway Maples can become quite tall 60 to 90 feet commonly.
*
Paperbark Maples
** An excellent variety for northern climes, though when smaller they may need to be protected from strong winds.
** Paperbarks are best known for their bark, which exfoliates and makes very lovely patterns.
** May grow to 40 feet.
*
Red Maples
** Perhaps the best known and best loved maple, these trees turn a splendid red in spring and fall.
** Very weather hardy, tolerant of soil conditions, but, like all maples, prefer a bit of shade.
** Like many maples, Reds have a root system that grows near the surface. This will prevent grass from growing near the maple, and, also, the home gardener is advised to be wary when digging or mowing around the base of the tree.
*
Red Japanese Maples
** Another well beloved variety. Generally the same cautions that apply to Green Japanese Maples apply to Reds.
** Japanese maples are the slowest growing of the maple varieties.
** May grow as high as 25 feet.
*
Sugar Maples
** Hardy trees, commonly used for their great lumber, and planted for the stunning variety of colors they produce in the fall.
** Beautiful, smooth, silvery bark.
** May grow as much as 125 feet.
You might also consider a few accessories which younger maple trees will appreciate, as they tend to be less hardy than the full-growns:
*
Tree Shelters
*
Staking Kits
** Great for trees not hardy against high winds
