Ionic air filters work by trapping dust particles using static electricity. These air purifiers silently draw in molecules through the system, trapping dirt, dust, and pollen on large metal blades. Unlike regular air filters, ionic purifiers make absolutely no noise at all, and they don't require new replacement filters. While they may not draw in as much air as fan driven air filters, ionic air purifiers require very little maintenance, and you may forget they are even there.
How to Clean an Ionic Purifier
Ionic purifiers are a breeze to clean. Usually, a light flicks on when it is time to clean your blades, or the system may make a slight buzzing noise. You will probably want to clean your system outside, so that you do not release the dust back into your house.
* Simply take out the steel blades, you will be able to see all the dirt your filter has trapped.
* Run the blades under tap water. Most of the dirt should just slide right off since water neutralizes the static charge.
* Use a clean sponge or paper towel to wipe off any dirt that remains on the blade. You can also use warm soapy water with dish detergent if you are having trouble with residual smells.
* While your purifier is unplugged, turn the base unit upside down a few times to shake out the remaining dirt and clean the coils.
* You can wash the outside of the unit with warm soapy water as well. They tend to get grimy over time if you have a lot of air pollution or cigarette smoke in your home.
