History and Geography Games

History  and geography  aren't always easy subjects for kids to learn in school. There's a lot of reading required and some kids just can't get into it. However, making history and geography more of a game  can make things a bit more entertaining and bearable for even the most uninterested students. Here are some new and some old games that have proved to be a fun method for learning about history and/or geography.

History

This board game is not new, however, it is a favorite for children aged 12 years and older. They can immerse themselves in this imaginary, unexplored land of Catan where every game has a new twist to it. A minimal learning curve makes this game pleasurable for all and it's perfect for anyone who enjoys trade and civilization development.

Learn a little about Egypt while constructing pyramids, Sphinxes, thrones, palaces and more. The sky is the limit and creativity is key to achieve the prize winning architectural creation. Ideal for children age 10 and older and perfect for those with an interest in building.

This is an award winning game for the PC and it can be played individually or against others. It is a real time strategy and simulation game that spans nine civilizations, has excellent 3D animation, battles, conquests, and an elaborate plot line that you control. For teens and adults. This is a must-see.

As the name suggests, the players in this game must "blaze" the trails of the US from past to present by answering questions about US history. Fun and educational, kids aged eight and older will learn a lot with this game no matter how much they do or don't know about the country's past.

This is a fast action civ board/card game that runs start to finish from the stone age to the space age in less than two hours. The goal is to gain technological advancements as quickly as possible while outsmarting the others and maintaining your status through the ages.

This classic game needs little explanation. Take risks, conquer new lands and become the leading ruler of the globe. For a twist on the original try the Lord of the Rings or 2210 AD version. This military strategy game is fine for everyone aged 10 and up.

Geography

This is a simple board/card game for youngsters aged 7 to 11 and it will quiz them on -- you guessed it -- the United States of America. They'll learn factoids and trivia as well as where important landmarks are located, state capitals, and of course, where all the states are. Sound too simple? It's fast-paced and timed so that kids don't get bored.

Professor Noggin's card games are sure to rack kids' brains. There are all sorts of topics to choose from, not just geography and history. Kids can learn about anatomy, dinosaurs, ocean life or outer space. Geography covers the US, Canada and the world. History topics include the Civil War, American Revolution and even Ancient Civilizations. This is a must-have for all kids aged seven and up.

This game is a great tool for learning world geography, including country names and locations, capitals and other facts. Best for children aged eight and up, this is especially recommended for parents to use with their children as a study tool.

Flick the spinner and pick up a card. You'll read a letter from a foreign pen pal and try and figure out the country and/or capital in which he or she lives by the clues in the letter. If you get it right, you'll advance around the board. The first one to the end wins. This is great for testing knowledge about geography and culture for young children aged four to eight. Onward ho! Head west with Lewis and Clark and learn about how the west was won. Kids must answer trivia questions about the going ons of Lewis and Clark to advance along the colorful board that leads to the Pacific Northwest. For ages eight and up.

This interactive software game is a great way for kids to learn about geography and social studies. The fast-paced game is colorful and fun for kids aged 8 to 12 that get to play detective as they learn.
