Canned and Packaged Goods
Sure, we'd all love to go to the farmer's market every day to get fresh fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. But most of us don't have time for that with jobs, families, social engagements and hectic schedules occupying most of our day. Therefore some great alternatives for getting those vital nutrients and maintaining a well-balanced diet are canned and packaged goods. Don't scoff! With so many options, from basic to gourmet, you can do pretty darn well eating out of your pantry. Of course it's best to mix the packaged stuff with fresh items, but for people on the go, canned and packaged foods are a lifesaver when it comes to a quick meal or snack.
Canned Foods
Often associated with unhealthy eating, there are many fruit and vegetable canned options, in addition to the traditional Chef Boyardee ravioli. Try canned peas, green beans, asparagus, chick peas, or kidney beans. Making a pasta sauce? How about using canned stewed tomatoes, spiced or plain, and canned tomato paste as a thickener. Or what about a chopped summer salad with canned corn, black beans, hearts of palm, and fresh avocado? Whip together a light vinaigrette and you're all set. Making a fruit salad? Pick up some some canned peaches, apricots, pears, and pineapple. Canned soups are also great and nutritious, and come in a wide selection. From the classic Chicken Noodle to Tomato Bisque to Turkey and Sausage Gumbo, there's a variety for everyone.
Packaged Goods
Sure packaged goods like cookies and crackers are great for snacking, as any college student will tell you. But what about when you want something more substantial than a cup of noodles for dinner, but don't have much time for prep? Packaged and boxed meals are also a great option for a busy lifestyle. With so many choices available at your local grocery store, there are endless opportunities for creativity. And many of these prepared complete meals often require little more than heating or boiling. Most also come in individual or family size. So think outside the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese box. Try different savory Indian and Thai options, rice and pasta dishes, or vegetarian meals. Pair with a fresh salad and you've got a complete, well-balanced meal.
