The Harry Potter series is written by JK Rowling--who, thanks to her formidable storytelling skills, is now one of the richest women in England--follows Harry's life at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and his clashes with Lord Voldemort, an evil, murderous wizard who tried to conquer the world. Though the books are primarily targeted to children, their dark themes have appealed to readers of all ages; in fact, the tales can even be a tad morbid those under the age of ten. Nonetheless, they also deal with issues of fitting in, prejudice, overcoming the odds, and love, so children can learn much from these motifs.
While it might be tempting to skip around and jump from book to book, these are best read in chronological order. So much is carried over from one volume to the next it's hard to keep up if you don't start from the beginning, as each story details one year of Harry's life at Hogwarts.

The first few Harry Potter movies combine multiple books into one film. However, the last ones have all followed the book as far as timelines go. These films are great for kids and adults alike: older viewers can appreciate the fantastic filming and realistic wizarding scenes. However, youngsters may need a parent with them during the later movies, considering some parts can be a little spooky for tots.
