Guy Movies

When you think "guy movie" does your mind immediately run through Old School  or 40 Year Old Virgin  clips? It probably does (a lot of people's minds do!), but while raunchy comedies starring Steve Carrell  have become the face of this genre, they are only a small portion of what it's all about. Our films are so much more than that, and after seeing some of the titles below, you'll understand why.

New Releases

What's new? Some recently released titles.

The Hangover  (2009)
Todd Phillips

Bachelor parties can get crazy, but what about the day after the bachelor party? Apparently, even crazier.

Fighting  (2009)
Dito Montiel

What happens when a con is offered glory and cash? He becomes a street-fighter--obviously.

Inglourious Basterds  (2009)
Quentin Tarantino

In occupied France, a revolutionary group of Jewish-American insurgents, known as "the Basterds," seek to kill members of the Third Reich.

The Informant!  (2010)
Steven Soderbergh

When the FBI asks you to dig up the dirt on your boss' price-fixing scams, you automatically become a secret agent, right? According to Mark Wittacre you do!

Harry Brown  (2010)
Daniel Barber

Gangs, murder, and a vengeful ex-marine? I'm just looking forward to watching Michael Caine with a gun.

Movies Every Guy Should See

Comedy

Nothing better than lazing on the couch and laughing your face off.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail  (1975)
Terry Gilliam ,Terry Jones

King Arthur in comedy? Yes, it can be done! In this celebrated comedy, king Arthur and his knights pummel barriers and search for the holy grail.

Slap Shot  (1977)
George Roy Hill

Playing dirty is what hockey players do best. It's a good thing they wear lots of padding, because Reggie Dunlop is a coach who makes your team's penalties look lame.

National Lampoon's Animal House  (1978)
John Landis

Anyone who has been in a frat (or anyone who loves hilarious revenge stories) will appreciate Animal House.

Caddyshack  (1980)
Harold Ramis

This film's off-center characters (played by Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, and Chevy Chase) will make golf your new favorite sport--or maybe not, but the movie is hilarious.

The Blues Brothers  (1980)
John Landis

Dan Aykroyd used to be funny? Hell yes, he was! Take a look at Dan in his heyday as he, John Belushi, and their reunited blues band get together, and get into trouble to save the orphanage where they grew up.

Stripes  (1981)
Ivan Reitman

You don't join the Army for a bit of light fun. This is what I would have said if my best friend tried to convince me to enlist. Fortunately for John Winger, his best friend goes along with the idea.

Fletch  (1985)
Michael Ritchie

Dressing up and going undercover may seem like an unnecessary research tactic, but for LA journalist Irwin Fletcher, it's the norm: a norm that leads to an interesting snafu.

Swingers  (1996)
Doug Liman

If you want your friend to bounce back from a breakup, throw him head first into the LA social scene. (Don't miss Vince Vaughn in this defining role.)

Bottle Rocket  (1996)
Wes Anderson

In the Wilson brothers' breakout performance, three men commit larceny, go on the run, and plan an elaborate heist.

The Big Lebowski  (1998)
Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

Jeff Bridges has been in some good movies, but I've never liked him more than when he is playing "The Dude" Lebowski. I guess it's this character's screw-all attitude that gets me (which, you have to admit, is awesome).

Action

What's more hardcore than a man with a bad temper and a gun (or a lethal punch)? NOTHING. That is why these movies will get your adrenaline pumping.

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly  (1966)
Sergio Leone

Clint Eastwood in a Western, with two other guys, and the promise of treasure and treachery? You may as well put testosterone in the DVD jacket.

Bullitt  (1968)
Don Siegal

There is nothing grittier than a cop who wants revenge, and that is what you get with Bullitt.

Dirty Harry  (1971)
Don Siegal

When a serial killer targets random victims in San Francisco, a cop makes it his business to stop the man behind murder. Are all San Franciscan cops this tough?

Enter the Dragon  (1973)
Michael Allin

A monk is hired by the British government to enter a tournament and investigate the crime lord running it. This monk, who is none other than Bruce Lee, has deadlier fists than Chuck Norris.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior  (1981)
George Miller

A world without gasoline? Noooo!!!! Mad Max searches post apocalyptic Australia for gasoline, and, in the process, finds a community that desperately needs his help.

The Terminator  and The Terminator II: Judgment Day  (1984 and 1991)
James Cameron

These post-apocalyptic, time-traveling action movies are classics! (Plus, they feature "the Arnold" in his pre-political days.)

Platoon  (1986)
Oliver Stone

We'll see how war can change a man when we follow a volunteer soldier through the Vietnam war.

Die Hard  (1988)
John McTiernan

A NYC cop single-handedly fights terrorists when they take over the office where his wife works.

Tombstone  (1993)
George P. Cosmatos ,Kurt Russell

What's with cops being pulled out of retirement? It puts a lot of faith in one man, very little faith in the general law, and a lot of disdain for renegade gang members.

Braveheart  (1995)
Mel Gibson

Best grudge ever. When his new wife is slain by the English, William Wallace leads a revolt that puts an end to British occupation in Scotland.

Saving Private Ryan  (1998)
Steven Spielberg

When this World War II films came out, it was regarded as one of the goriest war movies of its time (so, obviously, one of the best of its time).

Fight Club  (1999)
David Fincher

It's no secret that men have aggression (think about that testosterone I mentioned earlier). What if there was a club specifically designed to let it out?

The Matrix  (1999)
Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski

We all knew there would come a time when machines ruled the world. What we didn't guess is that our salvation would be in the arms of...Keanu Reeves?

The Departed  (2006)
Martin Scorsese

Infiltrating the Irish Mafia seems like a dangerous, and even impossible, task; but when the police ask you to do it, you do it.

Casino Royale  (2006)
Martin Campbell

All the James Bond movies  should be here because each one oozes masculinity and greatness.

Drama

None of these dramas is sappy (thank God).

The Maltese Falcon  (1941)
John Huston

There's nothing better than a good dame to get you to what you want--which, in this case, is the priceless Maltese Falcon statue.

The Bridge on The River Kwai  (1957)
David Lean

The Americans against the British? I guess that whole colonization grudge never really died. In a Japanese POW camp, a British colonel dedicates himself to constructing a bridge, and an American-led brigade dedicates themselves to destroying it.

The Hustler  (1961)
Robert Rossen

Maybe it's the smoke, or the cues and balls, but there's something about a pool hall that makes me feel right. Throw in a little gambling, and you're good to go!

Cool Hand Luke  (1967)
Stuart Rosenberg

Who could forget that famous line, "What we have here is a failure to communicate"? Cool Hand Luke is a prisoner pushing boundaries and making a name for himself.

The Godfather I, II, and III  (1972, 1974, 1990)
Francis Ford Coppola

The Godfather is hailed as one of the best crime dramas ever created. I tend to agree.

Papillon  (1973)
Franklin J. Schaffner

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." In a French prison, an innocent prisoner attempts escape after escape despite being captured and punished.

Apocalypse Now  (1976)
Francis Ford Coppola

Soldiers go crazy, it happens. But it's not every day that a soldier goes crazy and creates his own army.

Rocky  (1976)
John G. Avildsen

Can you listen to Eye of the Tiger and NOT think of Sylvester Stallone running uphill in swim trunks? I didn't think so.

Blade Runner  (1982)
Ridley Scott

I've often wondered what we would do with all the human clones we've proposed to (someday) make. Well, after seeing this movie, I wonder no more! Apparently, we put them to work.

Full Metal Jacket  (1987)
Stanley Kubrick

Look into the psyche of the US Marine during the Vietnam war. I bet you any amount of money that, at the very least, it'll be interesting.

Goodfellas  (1990)
Martin Scorsese

Small-time gangsters can become big shots, but at what price? This is certainly one of my favorite mob movies.

Heat  (1995)
Michael Mann

This is not yer typical ol' cops and robbers story. It is, however, a (somewhat) modern version of one.

The Boondock Saints  (1999)
Troy Duffy

Personally, I think whacking a bunch of mobsters is a good thing, but the law usually looks down upon vigilantes. In this movie, however, the cops may give them a break. (They may, I didn't say they do.)

City of God  (2002)
Fernando Meirelles ,Kátia Lund

This movie is perfectly raw, and captivating. If you like run down cities, gangs, guns, and life lessons, you will like City of God.

13 Tzameti  (2003)
Géla Babluani

Look at the person next to you. How much do you think his life is worth? Enough to gamble with it?

My Personal Favorites

I didn't say they are the best (though, of course, they are), they're just my personal picks.

Seven Samurai  (1954)
Akira Kurosawa

If I were an out-of-work samurai, I would jump at the chance for some excitement. Good thing rural villages never lack bad guys.

Taxi Driver  (1976)
Martin Scorsese

I save transportation money thanks to Robert De Niro's excellent portrayal of a psycho-cabbie.

Reservoir Dogs  (1992)
Quentin Tarantino

When you don't know your partners in crime--not even their real names--it is easy to feel suspicious of them. Oh, and the cast includes Steve Buscemi, so automatic win!

Carlito's Way  (1993)
Brian De Palma

If you want to see Al Pacino with a Puerto Rican accent, look no further! He still plays a bad boy gang member, but this time he's trying to turn a new leaf.

American History X  (1998)
Tony Kaye

If your past includes racial crimes and cult robes, you don't want your younger sibling to take after you. That is why our newly reformed protagonist steers his brother away from that life.
