Air Flow Meters
If you have a high performance car, you most likely want it to be running as smoothly as possible. In order for that to happen, you need to have a well-functioning air flow meter. If you're at all like me (and maybe you're not), you might not even know what that is, or why its important. Basically, an air flow meter measures the quantity of air going into the internal combustion engine. High performance vehicles require precise measurements from this meter to determine the air/fuel ratio in order to obtain their optimum performance and also to meet the government's emission standards. Eventually, the air flow meter in your car will wear out, and when this happens, the quality of your engine performance can decease significantly. It's important to understand these devices if you are interested in maintaining the highest degree of performance for your vehicle.
How They Work
There are a few different types of air flow meters available today, all of which measure slightly different things in varying ways. One type of popular meter measures the intake of the air flow rate according to the heat radiated through the meter. Using a constant thermostat, it makes comparisons with the air passing through it and determines the air/fuel ratio based on this information. In contrast, another type of popular air flow meter measures the flow rate according to the difference between the upstream and downstream temperatures of a heating element. Most other popular types also use temperature to determine the desired ratio, but they go about doing so in different ways. Your car may require a specific type of air flow meter, so check out your owner's manual before you purchase your next air flow meter.

* It doesn't matter what position your meter sits in your car, as long as you have all the right hoses hooked up to it, it is capable of measuring in almost every position.
* Installation for these devices is normally as simple as plugging it in and securing it. So, when it comes time to replace your old air flow meter, don't waste money and pay someone to do it for you. You could most likely install one of these with your eyes closed.
* In the development process of internal combustion engines with engine test stands, air flow meters are used to measure the continuous air consumption of combustion engines.
* If your current air flow meter is failing, your malfunction indicator lamp will normally turn on. Because of emission laws, this can prevent you from having your car pass inspection, so if you notice that your air flow meter is failing, change it quickly!
* Large trucks also use air flow meters, not to increase the performance of their vehicles, but to calculate how much fuel to inject into each cylinder port.
