Major Works

By the late 1960's, Coppola had broken into Hollywood and directed Fred Astaire and Petula Clark in an adaptation of the Broadway musical ''Patton'', a biography of the famed WWII general. The next year marked the beginning of an incredible run for Coppola: he directed and wrote many of his important films between 1972 and 1983, and became part of "New Hollywood," a group of American directors who introduced new methods of storytelling and production into the traditional studio system.    Though financially, physically and emotionally drained by the ardous ''Apocalypse'' shoot, Coppola worked steadily throughout the eighties. He forged ahead with the critical failure The Rainmaker.''

Family and Outside Ventures

Coppola's family is wellWidescreen'>Lost in Translation,'' the latter of which led to her being the first women nominated for an Oscar for Best Director. His nephews include actor Nicolas Cage and Jason Schwartzman, whose mother, Talia Shire, appeared in all three ''Godfather'' films.
