The Hollywood noir classics had a massive influence on filmmakers overseas, creating an entirely new type of filmmaking in the process. As fans and critics of the films began to make their own, the influences piled up and refracted into a brilliant array of styles, nuances, references, and reverence. The best examples can be found in the French New Wave movement, as well as in a slew of films produced by the prolific Japanese studios of the 50's and 60's.
