Flip Flops

If you go to any college campus in America you will notice something about the footwear of the students. It could be a beautiful spring day or the middle of winter and you will still find a vast amount of undergrads rocking flip flops. And why not? They are comfortable, easy to slip on after rolling out of bed, and many are very economic. People of all ages have become fans of the flip. Flip flops were originally confined to beach and pool areas. However, today it is very common to see flip flops paired with a pair of jeans, shorts or a skirt. Even if you are not a fan of the sight of the human foot, you have to admit they have their benefits.

Flip Flops derive their alliterate name from the sounds they make while walking. This is because flip flops lack a back and and stick to the ground after every step. If an open toe shoe has a strap or a backing, it is no longer considered a flip flop.

Types of Flip Flops

There are two main types of flip flops

  • The slide- The slide is a shoe with no backing and a band across the toes. Some people pair this shoe with cotton socks. Although to some this is a fashion faux pas, some enjoy its practicality.
  • The thong- The thong is characterized by a "V" shaped-strap that separates the big and second toe.

In addition flip flops are now often paired with either a wedge  or a kitten heel

Material Types

Flip flops are most often made of plastic, rubber or leather. Rubber flip flops are usually the most inexpensive and many people consider them to be the most comfortable. However, rubber flip flops are not known for their durability. Many do not usually last for more than a year or so before the straps break.

Keep in mind

  • The open nature of the flip flop can cause the foot to be exposed to the elements.
  • Flip flops give no ankle support. This can lead to sprains and can cause the foot to overpronate
