When A Plan Comes Together

During a fire, flood, or any other type of disaster or emergency, panic is the first feeling to set in. This often leads to unclear thinking, which is not the state of mind you want to have during an emergency. Clear thinking, preplanned drills, and an emergency kit will increase you and your family's chance of survival. Now, if you're not sure where to start, the Red Cross offers advice on everything from flood emergencies to safe swimming in lakes. Here are a few suggestions on emergency preparedness. * Familiarize yourself with emergencies or disasters that occur in your neighbourhood, city, or town. If you live near a forest or wooded area, be prepared to tackle brush fires with a emergency silver blanket handy in case you're trapped outdoors. * Make a plan. Have a meeting with family or household members to discuss how an emergency should be approached. Assign tasks for each person and make sure everyone knows the layout of the house. Choose a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated. The Red Cross recommends practising escape drills twice a year. * Replace carbon monoxide detectors once a year. * Make sure one person in your house is CPR certified.  * Have an emergency kit ready to accommodate members of your family.

If you choose to make your own kit, these are some items you need to have: * If there's ever an injury, you will be able to tend to it with surgical scissors. * Use cleansing agents, antibiotic ointment, and hydrogen peroxide for treating wounds. * Always have a portable fireproof safe. * If you have to spend the night outside, make sure you have waterproof blankets or ponchos to cover you up and keep you warm. Also have extra of clothing available. * Put your family's mind at ease by playing family travel games to pass the time. * Never underestimate the length of time you will be without food and water.
