Pressed Felt
Pressed felt is a little less durable than woven felt, but it ranges in thickness (a maximum measurement being 3"). This is a very old form of fabric manufacturing fibers'>wool fibers to naturally interlock, so pressed felt is often used for gaskets, filters, and wipers.
Handmade Felt
colorful fabric work. To create handmade felt, wool fibers are laid down on a board and made damp with very hot water. The fibers are then convulsed or physically shaken on top of the board; this action combined with hot water forces the fibers to bind together in a mat finish, which then shrink forming a firm fabric.
Woven Felt
Woven felt is commonly used for resting or handling household products of
musical instruments.
Needled Felt
Also known as prefelt or
needlefelt, this is a loose fabric felt. This type of felt is typically thinner than pressed felt, reaching a maximum thickness of about 1 1/2 inches. Synthetic fibers, or a blend of synthetic fibers and wool, are mechanically interlocked by a machine comprised of thousands of moving needles. It is usually less expensive than pressed or woven felt and there are hardly any noticeable damages at the edges of the felt when the fabric is cut.
