When I was a kid, I built a
rocketship in my backyard.
I come from a family of contractors and they passed on a gift for working with my hands. They taught me how to use
tools never had to worry about making a living.
I was about seven years old and, after watching
rocketship. Rather than chuckle at my foolishness, they sat me down and started drawing up a plan. How big did I want it to be? Where did I want the door? How was I going to lay out the internal structure? We hashed it out and we went to work the next day.
My old man had tons of lumber and sheet metal in our garage left over from other projects, so we had all the basics. It took us three weekend to finish, working in the hot summer sun. I remember that the
screws, and I'd prepare materials for the next day's work. I could feel my folks watching me from the windows, but they never came out to me. I appreciated that. I liked the solitude.
I never made it into space. Hell, I barely made it out of Chico, California. But when I stepped back and looked at the spaceship I built with my two little hands, I felt...capable. Amazed with what I did. I set out to make something, I planned it out, and I built it. Sure, my folks helped, but I knew that they weren't doing it for me, they were teaching me how to do it. I felt like I could do big things by myself. It's a narcotic feeling for a seven year old, and it was probably the point where I really started growing up.
There were a lot of
tap bolts in that big gray spaceship. A lot of small parts. Big dreams need small, strong things to hold them together.
