Men's 2011 Spring Fashion

Letter From the Editor

The winter thaw has officially begun, and it is finally time to put away our cumbersome boots , our heavy overcoats, and our wool scarves .  The Men's Spring 2011 fashion shows offered us a wealth of stylistic options from luxury fashion to gritty, urban-chic.  Below, we will take a look at some classic spring staples, as well as some forward-thinking styles that illuminated runways from New York to Milan.

Spring and Summer Footwear

  • We cannot talk about men's springtime footwear without discussing the bare ankle. As temperatures rise, the tasteful rolling of jeans and slacks becomes ubiquitous amongst stylish men.
  • Some designers have specifically altered the length of some of their dressier pants to allow for the presence of the bare ankle, offering a sophisticated, haute bohemian look.

Men's Accessories: Sunglasses

When I was thinking about buying my first pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers , a friend of mine said, "...they're like air conditioning for your eyes." As you can imagine, I was a bit perplexed by this eccentric, if not ringing endorsement; however, I cannot deny that my friend turned out to be right.

Sunglasses  confer upon the wearer a sense of mystery and quiet confidence, and are an essential accessory for any well-dressed man. To get away from the square frames you see on every street corner, try a thick, rounded frame (think Johnny Depp's Moscot shades).

Men's Sunglasses for Spring and Summer:

Springtime Slacks: Denim and Chino

Jeans are a staple of the winter, and we understand that wearing the same pair of beat-up Levi's for so many months can be a bit tiring. I for one love denim, so we will highlight some great jeans for spring, but, we would be remiss if we did not mention the pants all the style gurus are raving about for spring and summer: colored chinos.

Well Worn: A Trend that I Love

The young, Israeli-born designer Yigal Azrouel has been on the radar of prominent fashion critics since the release of his eponymous women's line in 1998. Since then, he has gone on to establish a prominent boutique in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, and has continued to create innovative clothing for both men and women.

Azrouel has an amazing line of lightweight scarves for men, which are perfect for the transition from winter to spring, and can certainly be worn in summer.

The lightweight scarf is not a terribly common look amongst American men, but, is widely worn throughout Europe. The scarfs can be worn with a t-shirt and a leather jacket, offering just the right amount of comfort as the temperature changes.

Never Too Early to Talk About Summer!

I realize that it may be a bit premature to begin talking about upcoming summer styles when we haven't even had our first official day of spring yet, but, I can't resist. The thought of the beach, as I'm sitting here in the rain in New York, is enough to drive me crazy. To temper myself, I'll only show two styles that are going to be a big hit this summer.
  • Original-Cut Boardshorts: A 15- to 18-inch cut from the top of the waistband to the bottom of the outseam. The return of shorter men's shorts and the popularity of cut-offs will naturally transition to the beach. Birdwell's Beach Britches  come in a variety of lengths and offer a laid-back, retro style for summer days in the city and weekends at the shore.
  • Espadrilles : These incredibly comfortable and lite shoes made of jute rope and canvas are great for the summertime. Espadrilles come from a mixed French and Catalan background and therefore will offer a very original, continental style. Toms Canvas Classics  work for the beach but are suitable for most casual outings, too.
