Not Quite a Player
If you plan on using the ball at all, you need to know what exactly you'll be using. While some are intuitive enough to just pick up a ball and know what feels right, most people need a little pointing in the right direction. Some things to look for are:

* Channels: The pebbling on whatever surface you choose can vary too. More pebbled surfaces "stick" to fingers better. A leather, which has shallower channels. Deeper channels are good for beginners learning how to move with the ball.
