FW Murnau Buying Guide

Thanks to FW Murnau, you might be familiar with the figure of Nosferatu. People dress up like him on Halloween, and there's even a Spongebob episode that features him in the ending. You've got to have seen remakes or just heard the name in passing. However, you may not have heard that the infamous villain was actually a ripoff of an even more infamous Count. Read on for more about Count Orlak and his legendary creator.

FW Murnau

Some things you should know about FW Murnau: * Was German. * Born Friedrich Wilhelm Plumpe but took his last name from the town Murnau am Staffelsee. FW Staffelsee doesn't have quite the same ring, does it? * Sued by Bram Stoker's widow for ''Nosferatu's uncanny similarities with ''Dracula.'' ** Every print of the film was supposed be destroyed, but the true spirit of humanity prevailed and bootleg copies survived, which can now be viewed as DVDs, or the more archaic VHS. * 1924's ''The Last Laugh'' introduced the subjective point of view for the camera, where the audience sees out of the eyes of the actor, along with the 'unchained camera technique.' * Murnau moved to Hollywood two years later and directed the film ''Sunrise'', considered as one of the greatest films of all time. ** He won the first Academy Awards from the very first awards ceremony for ''Sunrise''. * Murnau preferred to direct silent films, even after the emergence of sound in cinema. * Greta Garbo was one of only 11 people who attended his funeral, and kept a death mask of him on her desk.

Nosferatu

Why we like Orlak way more than Dracula. * The word "nosferatu" sounds so much more romantic than the word "vampire." * We're sick of Victorian villains as uppity Brits. Bring on a dark and mysterious German! * Dracula's too pretty and suave, so move over Edward Cullen. Some gals prefer a more roughlike and frightening. * Count Orlak is truly unique because he's the only vampire, er... nosferatu known to man. At least you know in a heavy necking session, he wouldn't turn you into a bloodthirsty monster. * He's a true nightowl, so you can enjoy some late-night dates or go dancing under the stars, but make sure to make it home before dawn!
