Why do we call Floppy disks played a major role in the computer and internet explosion of the 1990's, but they have since been supplanted by CD's, DVD's, USB drives, and the internet. Since the final generation of popular floppy disks only had a 1.44 MB storage capacity, they are really only useful for basic files and data. That's not even an MP3 file right there. Still, floppy disks are bought today for commercial and industrial purposes. Many old manufacturing machines that are still very useful only take floppy disks. Or if you have kept that 80's or 90's computer running by some stroke of engineering genius and want to use the disks it was meant to take, there are still many floppy disks still available.
Types of Floppies
Here are a few basic principles on floppy disks. Most are formatted for Macs in a few minutes.
*1.44 MB.
*720 KB.
* 5.25 inch high density disks are truly floppy. They hold 1.20 MB.
* 5.25 double density floppy disks hold only 360 KB.
* You would be hard pressed to find 8 inch floppies these days, but they are around, if only for the novelty.
