Optoelectronic devices are things that either produce light or use it in order to operate. That sounds like almost anything that gives off light, but that isn't the case. Optoelectronics, especially when involving lamps, means LED lights: like the kind that are used on that electronic sign when you're stuck in traffic and is letting you know there's construction up ahead. If it weren't for those lights, you'd be sitting in your car oblivious and pissed off, instead of informed and pissed off!
LED stands for light-emitting diode. Lamps that run off of LED lights usually last longer and are highly efficient, but they do cost a bit more. If you are looking for a LED lamp for a specific use, or are just interested in what they can be used for, you came to the right place!
The LED Lightbulb
As of this 2010, there's only a few LED lightbulb options for replacing your regular lightbulbs, but more are on the way. There's several things to consider with choosing these lightbulbs as replacement.
* LED Lightbulbs aren't the brightest. Their strength is approximately equal to a 60 watt regular lightbulb. They also can't be dimmed.
* Prices started high, but are starting to come down. Finding them online may provide you a better discount than going to a local hardware store.
* The lifespan is incredibly high. LED bulbs will last about 25 to 30 years when used under normal conditions.
* These bulbs have recently become available in lots of colors.
Other LED Lighting Options
If you are looking for lighting for other areas, besides just replacing bulbs in your ceiling light, there are plenty of other options as well.
* Desk lamps made with LEDs are a great option for the bedroom or study area. Get one with a flexible head so you have lighting wherever you need it.
* If you are looking for a ceiling lamp that takes up a whole tile, like used in many public areas, LEDs work wonderfully in this capacity.
* If you want a light that changes colors for atmosphere, Phillips carries a translucent changing LED lamp that comes with a remote.
* LEDs are also great for spotlights and tracklights, which will be a big help when lighting up an outdoor area.
