Whether you're dabbling to save money on expensive home servicing, or you feel that home improvements and repairs are best done with your own hands, there's just something so satisfying about it. When it comes to replacing motors in furnaces, HVAC systems, blowers, power tools, and other electromechanical products, the key is understanding capacity and voltage.
Motor Capacitors
Motor capacitors alter currents and can boost electrical capacity by creating a rotating magnetic field. They boost efficiency and performance and are usually tied into the motor system. Capacitors use MFD or microfarads to measure electrical capacity. They also use voltage; be sure that voltage in the replacement capacitor is within 5% of the original, or you will have problems with your device.
There are three types of motor capacitors:
* Run capacitors, designed for continuous use while the device is running; they range from 3-70 MFD.
* Start capacitors help devices stop and start continuously; their range is greater than 70 MFD.
* Dual run capacitors work best in dual motor devices, and vary in capacity.
Motors
Electric motors themselves fall into numerous categories, of which we're most concerned with universal motors. This is the type of motor one is most likely to encounter in their home appliances and electronics like drills, washing machines, and hair dryers. Designed for both AC and DC power sources, these motors are versatile. You can also seek out specific DC or AC motors if your device calls for it.

It also important to run the device in question in proportion to its load: an empty blender on high will soon burn out, and running a drill on a low setting against say, steel, is guaranteed to affect the drill more than the steel.
