Electric Wine Chillers
Electric wine coolers are helpful in making sure that you serve your wines at the optimum temperature. There are two main types of electric chillers: single bottle and multi-bottle.
Chilling Wine
Most people with even limited wine expertise know white wines should be served chilled. What many people don't realize, however, is that red wines can benefit from a brief chill. Although conventional wisdom is that red wine is served at room temperature, the room to which this refers is in a drafty building in the centuries before climate-controlled homes. Generally speaking, this archetypal room was not as cold as your refrigerator. Wines, even white wines, should not be stored in the fridge; they should only be in the refrigerator for 40 minutes (reds) or an hour or two (whites) until they reach the optimal serving temperature. Generally, Red wines should be served between 60 and 65 degrees and white wines should be served between 50 and 55 degrees.
Single Bottle Chillers
|
Single bottle chillers are generally more useful for rapidly cooling a bottle that you need to serve immediately, or for keeping an open bottle at the desired temperature. They aren't terribly practical for long-term storage at a particular temperature. |
Multi-Bottle Chillers/Wine Storage
|
If you intend to keep and age a collection of wine, a storage unit is a good choice for you. Storage units will maintain a constant temperature, allowing your wine to age well. They are especially handy for people who do not have access to an appropriate cellar or basement.
Remember, if you plan to be a true collector, you will want two wine coolers -- one for your red and one for your white wines. For general use, you can keep the temperature around 60 degrees if you are storing both red and white wines. Just remember to chill your whites a little further before you drink them. |
