Efficient Heating and Insulation Systems

Introduction

The average homeowner spends about $1,900 annually on energy bills, and typically, half of our usage is due to heating and cooling.  Luckily, you can reduce your energy bill by installing efficient heating and insulation systems in your home.

Here are some hints that it may be time to replace that old heating system.

  • If some of your rooms are too hot or too cold, your insulation system may be the problem.  If your home is not sealed properly, you will lose heat and your system will have to work harder.
  • If your system needs frequent maintenance and your energy bills are very high, it may be time to buy a new, energy efficient furnace
  • If your furnace is noisy, you may have the wrong sized system for your house.
  • If your heat pump, air conditioner, boiler, or furnace is over 12-15 years old, it is time to replace it with a new, Energy Star  approved system.

Quick Insulation Tips

Draft guards  and door sweeps  prevent heat loss from your home.  The warm inside exerts a "pull" on the cold outside air into your home.  Draft guards are a cheap way to reduce your winter heating costs.

There are several different kinds of window insulation kits  that stop drafty windows from sucking the heat out of your house. They are easy to apply and the energy savings will add up over time.

Personal heaters when used properly, can reduce your heating bill if you are only in one room of your house for an extended period of time.  They are also good for those who prefer warmer temperatures than their roommates do.

More Tips

  • Get a programmable thermostat  so you waste minimal energy while you are away or sleeping.
  • Check your furnace filter every month.  Clogged and dirty filters force your furnace to work harder.
