In 1984, the first Dragonlance novel was written by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, based on a Dungeons and Dragons game session.  The fantasy series is set in the fictional world of Krynn, depicting the quests of mythical characters such as mages, elves, warriors, and gods. The main storyline of the original Dragonlance series has been written by the two original authors, with multiple books written by several further authors, covering different times and characters.

Original DragonLance

The main series, written by Weiss and Hickman, consists of (in chronological order):

  • Chronicles  (1984-1985)
    • Dragons of Autumn Twilight : The first DragonLance book details the meeting between the Companions and the beginning of The War of the Lance. The reunion of the Companions is interrupted when they find the village they were to meet has been taken over by a religious order called the Seekers.  This pulls them into an ongoing struggle against the dark goddess, Takhisis.
    • Dragons of Winter Night : Word has traveled that the Dragon Queen, Takhisis, has returned and all nations and races must band together to fight this common evil.  The task proves to be daunting as elves and humans fight amongst themselves.
    • Dragons of Spring Dawning : Armed with the legendary DragonLance, the Companions begin the final battle against the evil goddess Takhisis and her legions.  But even on the verge of victory, secrets long hidden threaten to render their sacrifices meaningless.
  • Legends  (1986)
    • Time of the Twins : Former protagonist, Raistlin Majere, weaves a plan to bring the forces of darkness under his own control, and it is up to his twin brother, Caramon, to stop him.
    • War of the Twins : Catapulted forward in time by Raistlin’s powerful magic, Caramon and Crysania find themselves aiding the mage’s unholy quest to master the Queen of Darkness. To his dismay, Raistlin discovers along the way that the annals of time are not so easily bent to his will.
    • Test of the Twins : With Crysania at his side, Raistlin engages the Queen of Darkness in a battle for the ultimate prize, a seat among the gods. Caramon at last realizes the painful sacrifice he must make to prevent his brother’s success in this climactic edition of the series.
  • Dragons of Summer Flame  (1995): This is the prequel to the current War of Souls trilogy.  The many character deaths in the book brought the DragonLance series to an apparent ending point, which was resolved by taking the world into the Fifth Age, the Age of Mortals.
  • War of Souls  (2000-2002)
    • Dragons of a Fallen Sun : Several years later, the sword has been passed to the heirs of the fabled Companions and they must face the menace of Raistlin, the corrupted mage.
    • Dragons of a Lost Star : As the elven kingdom of Silvanesti falls, the mysterious Mina leads her forces triumphantly into that conquered nation, only to face danger from friends and foes alike.
    • Dragons of a Vanished Moon : The one god behind Mina's rise to power is revealed to be the evil goddess, Takhisis.  The War of Souls comes to its dramatic conclusion in this novel.
