No, we're not talking about Frisbee and we're not talking about your standard game of golf. Disc golf lies somewhere in between. The goal of the game is to throw a golf disc into a basket at the end of the course in as few throws as possible. There are three types of discs: putter discs, mid-range discs, and driver discs. Let's learn about the awesome powers of drivers!
What You Need To Know
Not all disc drivers are the same. Like any piece of equipment, there are a variety of options and there are several factors to consider. Disc drivers are the most difficult discs to throw. However, once you master this skill, you will be an unstoppable force! Disc drivers are the most sensitive of the three and have the sharpest edge. Like all discs, they come in various weights and sizes. A lighter disc driver will naturally fly farther and will require less throwing power. Heavier drivers will be much more accurate and predictable but will require more throwing power to achieve longer distances.
Beginners and players with low throwing power should choose discs that weigh 160 grams or less. Moderate players will want to stick with discs weighing between 167-172 grams, and heavy power players will want 170 grams or higher. Besides your throwing power ability, you also need to consider the direction you will be throwing. If you need the disc to curve, lighter drivers are recommended. For a straight path, go with a heavier driver.
Choosing Your Driver
Just like in regular golf, drivers are meant to go the distance. There are two basic types of disc drivers: distance drivers and fairway drivers. Like the name suggests, distance drivers will go much farther, but using them requires more skill and accuracy. A fairway driver lies between a distance driver and a mid-range disc.
Discs are also marked by numbers to determine their speed. A disc with a speed of 13, for example, will go extremely fast. The faster the speed, the farther it will go. There is also a glide number, ranging from 0 to 6. 6 will glide with the wind and go much farther no matter what the speed is. Lastly, you must consider how the driver will turn. The more negative the number, the greater the right turn. A higher number means it will turn left.
Some of the most popular brands for drivers include: Discraft, Gateway, Innova, Latitude 64, Lightening, and Millennium. Remember, never settle for just one driver. Varying weights and sizes will enhance your game and hone your skills.
