Believe it or not sand paper dates back to the 13th century in China, according to Wikipedia at least. Funny to think about that, I'd never have guessed it would take 5,500 years of human civilization before we figured out scratchy paper for polishing stuff.
Sandpaper, specific to
belt sanders, is shaped like a belt to accommodate the sander. Make sure that before purchasing a sanding belt, it will fit your machine according to its given dimensions. Materials commonly used in sandpaper manufacture are:

** For woodworking.

In the United States, sandpaper is rated according to the CAMI (Coated Abrasive Manufacturers Institute) standard. Coarser grit sandpaper will have a lower CAMI number than finer grit sandpaper.
* The finer the grit (higher CAMI numbers), the more useful for polishing and detail applications.
* The coarser the grit (lower CAMI numbers) the more useful the sandpaper for roughing and removing material.
** A less common application of sandpaper is in roughing surfaces for adhesive applications.
* Paper with very coarse grits is also used for varnish and paint removal.
* When polishing you'll want to purchase a variety of sandpapers, starting with a coarse grit and work your way down to a finer grit paper.
** For bare woods you might start with a 60 or 80 grit paper and work up towards a 400 or 500 grit paper.
