Deep Conditioners and Hair Masks

Contents[Hide]

Deep conditioners also known as hair masks are very important for those with dry or damaged hair and are ideal for frequent use. They are also good for those with normal or color treated hair when used at least once a week as a supplement to their normal hair care routine. Deep conditioners are not always necessary for those with fine or limp hair since they will cause the hair shaft to become heavy and weighed down. Leave-in conditioners  might be a more suitable solution for combatting dry locks when you have thin hair.

The ingredients in deep conditioners are usually more "fatty", containing heavy silicone materials to really coat and protect the hair shaft from the elements, heat, styling and any fracturing of the outer follicle. In the end, this is what keeps the hair from becoming brittle and frizzy. Because the ingredients in deep conditioners are so important, sometimes you might have to spend more for a high-quality product.

Quick Picks

Below are some quick picks of both moderately priced and high-end deep conditioners to try.

Cheap $

Avon Hair-Care Planet Spa Olive Oil Hair Mask  ($9)

Avon's entire Mediterranean Olive Oil product line is heavenly. Great for people with very dry skin and hair. Plus, the products smell nice and are reasonably priced.

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner  ($5)

While not incredibly moisturizing for a weekly treatment, it is good for dry hair on a daily basis, as the name suggests. Plus, at the price, it's a steal.

Redken Smooth Down Butter Treatment  ($10)

Redken's conditioners are great for normal to dry hair or they can be used as a daily conditioner for those with very dry hair.

Paul Mitchell Super Charged Moisturizer  ($20)

This is a weekly treatment for normal to dry hair, although it could be used more frequently should you have very damaged hair.

Nexxus Humectress  ($15)

This can be used as a deep conditioning treatment or as a leave in, depending on the type of hair you have. Usually it's best rinsed out unless your locks are seriously parched.

Steep $$$

Darphin Creme Mask Shea Butter  ($47)

Darphin Creme Mask has shea butter plus jojoba and other essential oils. This heavy moisturizer is great for very dry hair. For a less pricey, but almost equal product in quality is Darphin's Conditioning Care with jojoba oil It costs half as much but is good for a variety of hair types and offers superior conditioning.

Fresh Sugar Shea Butter  ($38)

Fresh Sugar Shea Butter is great for a super conditioner, however, a less expensive option is Jason Natural Cosmetics shea butter It has the same properties but only costs around $10 for the same amount of product. Another comparable product would be Frederic Fekkai Shea Butter Conditioner  ($22).

Ojon Conditioner  ($50)

The quality of the ojon oil (palm nut oil) has been praised by everyone who has used it and the shampoos are just as good (although over-priced). The only drawback to this product is the tobacco smell. You might also try Phytokarité Ultra Nourishing Conditioner which is also infused with natural oils but better smelling.

Kerastase Masquintense  ($45)

Kerastase brand is very expensive, but they are renowned for creating quality products. This particular product has shown to go above and beyond as a heavy-duty moisturizer. Note that it is practically fragrance-free, which may or may not be pleasing to some people.

Bumble & Bumble Damage Therapy Masque  ($37)

Bumble to Bumble has won the 2005 CEW Beauty Award for this intense conditioning treatment.
