Reduced shank drill bits have shanks with diameters lower than the rest of the drill bit so that even larger sized drill bits can be used with the most commonly used 3/8” drill chucks.
Material
Reduced shank drill bits are available in following materials:
* Steel reduced shank drill bits are suitable for use on softer materials like wood or thin plastic.
* High Speed Steel cobalt steel alloy have more cobalt in them than HSS drill bits which make them hard enough for use on hard metals like stainless steel.
* There are other materials brazed onto the drill bit tip like polycrystalline diamond to provide the hardness required to drill through tough abrasive materials.
Coating on Reduced Shank Drill Bits
* Black oxide is the most inexpensive coating material that reduces temperature while drilling and resists corrosion.
*½” shank. You can choose the shank that best fits your drilling machine.
* Some reduced shank drill bits have two or more flattened edges. Three flatted shack design help avoid slippage of the drill bit from the drill chuck.
