Skateboarding Apparel
I skated all through my adolescence and early twenties in San Francisco, the great Mecca of the 90s skateboarder world. This is what I learned:
* Skateboarding is the satisfying thwack of finally landing a trick you've failed fifty times before.
* Skateboarding is getting kicked out of bank parking lots, warehouse loading bays, basketball courts, and a million other places by the people you feared you'd one day become.
* Skateboarding is standing at the edge of a high vertical ramp, certain that you're gonna get hurt, and dropping in anyway.
* Skateboarding is feeling speed wobbles as you're bombing a hill and being forced to make a choice: jump off and take the scrapes, or ride it out and hope for the best.
* Skateboarding is sitting in a 7-11 parking lot with your friends at 1AM, pooling your change together for drinks, wanting to ride faster than the world can chase you.
* Skateboarding is fire and graphite and blood and adrenaline and stupidity and recklessness and fun.
That's what it meant to me. It gave me an activity, a culture, a place to belong. Part of that comes with sporting the right look. I remember being 14 years old. I'd just bought my first pile of baggy skater shorts, a Think skateboards tee-shirt, new Airwalks, and a freshly shaved head. I put it all on and looked at myself in a mirror. I felt larger than life. I felt iconic. I saw a skater looking back at me.
Just Want To Skate
Skateboarding doesn't have a set uniform like most team sports, so it's not like you ''need'' to wear skaterGames brought skateboarder culture to the mainstream, dozens of skateboard clothing companies have sprung up or become much more successful. Major brands include Alien Workshop, Bird, Blind, Chocolate, Commune, Consolidated, Creature (my favorite brand and my nickname in high school), DC, Emerica, Independent Truck Company, Foundation, Flip, Girl, Plan B, Real, Spitfire, Think, Zoo York, and a million others.
