You are on a killer 5.9, your fingertips are gripping the edge of a shallow crevice, the side of your foot is pressed against the slippery rock, and there seems to be nowhere to go from here. Then your eyes catch sight of a tiny handhold, a slight curve of the rock really, and you know it is the only chance you have to reach the summit. You reach your sweaty hands around to the chalk bag, and . . . this scenario could end in many different ways: you struggle with the bag until you lose your handhold and are set back 10 feet of grueling climbing; you find that the bag has slipped or spilled; or you plunge your hand into the bag, rub chalk on your hands, grasp that difficult hold, and set about reaching the summit! You have a hundred things to think about while on the rock, the chalk bag shouldn't be one of them. You've probably done a good deal of research before selecting your chalk bag that fits your needs and your climb. After all, you don't want the chalk bag to determine your success.
