Although I consider myself an experienced bystander in the world of professional sports, I was not always the football connoisseur that I am today. It wasn't too long ago that my knowledge of football extended no further than simple recognition of famous superstars (Troy Aikman, Dan Marino, Emmet Smith) and league Champions (Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, New England Patriots). As I entered the football universe, I immersed myself whole-heartedly and soaked up as many details as I could gather--plays, rules, free agents, names of quarterbacks, team rankings, and more. However, it wasn't too long before my naivety (which I couldn't fully repress no matter how hard I tried) reared it's ugly head when I first thought that the Cleveland Browns' name was some kind of joke (of the bathroom humor type). Unfortunately, the Browns bore the brunt of my embarrassment and therefore the joke. Even more unfortunately, the joke isn't too far off the marker. Cleveland does happen to be one of those forgotten teams in the NFL, and--especially in the past decade--have had a consistently losing record. What most people of my generation don't know about this team is that they have had a long history of success in their previous life before the establishment of the Superbowl tournament in 1967: the Browns had won eight league championships before 1970. Since then, however, they have yet to claim a league championship or participate in the Super Bowl (only one of five NFL teams that has not qualified for the Super Bowl yet). Furthermore, Cleveland is the only city in the National Football League that has neither hosted nor sent a team to the Super Bowl.

Despite these negative stats, dedicated Cleveland Browns fans hold out hope that their team will once again find their way to glory. As the 2009 season gets underway, the small but determined group of loyal Browns fan will be sporting the brown, orange and white to demonstrate their support.
