Classic Film Noir

The 40s and 50s spawned the archetypes of the noir genre: stark black and white cinematography, hardened and cynical male leads (usually a private detective) and a femme fatale of questionable morality. Because of their relatively low budgets, a slew of noir movies were produced en masse during this period. It's a great starting point for anyone interested in the genre, and most still pack a punch today.
